Accessory Muscles: A Cause of Nerve Compression in the Distal Forearm. Case Report and Literature Review International Journal of Morphology
Román Veas,Javier; Ruiz Conrads,Pedro; Braga Silva,Jefferson.
Nerve compression by anomalous muscles located at the wrist and distal forearm is an infrequent condition. Accessory muscles may compress underlying structures in the Carpal Tunnel region or ulnar canal , producing pain and paresthesia. Two cases of ulnar and median nerve compression, caused by prominent accessory muscles at the distal forearm, are described. Literature review is presented.

ANDREAE VESALII: THE BONES AND MUSCLES International Journal of Morphology
Ayres de Vasconcellos,Henrique; Barros de Vasconcellos,Pedro Henrique.
The historical references are taken from Aristoteles (384-322 a C) considered the father of Kinesiology, and Claudius Galenus from Pergamon (131-201), the first team doctor. Both men´s studies shared the same objective: functional-anatomic aspects related to the Locomotive System. Although there were several descriptive anatomic studies of bones and muscles, it was Andreas Vesalius (1514-1564), whom most significantly contributed to the development of a new methodology for the lectures of Anatomy, with the setting up of skeletons and dissection of bodies during his lessons. Objectives: the aim of this paper is study the description of bones and muscles from the Vesalius works. We search Vesalius´s publications, specially "De Humani...

Cambios bioquímicos post-mortem en músculos de diferentes especies pesqueras. Determinación de la vida útil de las mismas en frío OceanDocs
Massa, A.E..

Dietary effects on muscle fatty acid composition of finished heifers PAB
Silva,Regiane Gregório da; Prado,Ivanor Nunes do; Matsushita,Makoto; Souza,Nilson Evelázio de.
The effects of diet on Longissimus muscle fatty acid composition was determined using 24 crossbred heifers of Simmental vs. Nelore and Limousin vs. Nelore. The experimental diets were: 1) corn and yeast (CY); 2) corn, cottonseed meal + meat and bones meal (CMB); 3) cassava hull and yeast (CHY); 4) cassava hull, cottonseed meal + meat and bones meal (CHMB). Feeding CHMB diets resulted in lower lipid and higher cholesterol contents (P<0.05) for both crosses. Most of the identified fatty acids were monounsaturated, and the highest percentage was found to oleic acid (C18:1w9), with values ranging from 32.54 to 46.42%. Among the saturated fatty acids the palmitic acid (C16:0) showed the highest percentage, with its contents ranging between 19.40 and 32.44%....

To analyze the effects of concurrent training (CT) on the muscle fibers of Wistar rats submitted to standard and hypercaloric diets. In total, 40 rats were used, divided into 4 groups: Sedentary Group (GS); Exercise Group (GE), Obese Sedentary Group (OS) and Obese Exercise Group (OE). The animals performed a CT protocol consisting of: muscle strength training and aerobic training, carried out 3 times a week for 45 days. The smallest diameter of muscle fibers (MDF) was analyzed to evaluate muscle hypertrophy. It was observed that the OE group presented a significant decrease in MDF, compared to the OS group (OE=77.41 µm vs. OS=98.58 µm). In addition, the animals that performed CT demonstrated muscle hypertrophy (GE=74.39 µm vs. GS=72.13 µm). In conclusion,...

A comparative study on the pre-branchial cranial anatomy of the scalloped hammerhead sharks [Sphyrna lewini (Griffith & Smith, 1834)] and the Brazilian sharpnose shark [Rhizoprionodon lalandii (Valenciennes, 1839)] was carried out to check the modification in the musculature, inervation and optic stalk related to the appearance of the cephalofoil in Sphyrna Rafinesque, 1810. A total of seven adults and one juvenile of R. lalandii and eight juveniles of S. lewini were examined. In S. lewini the levator palaliquadrati and the levator labii superioris were the most modified cephalic muscles, as they became dorsalventrally attached and laterally developed. Among the oculomotor muscles, the recti followed the lateral expansion of the head constituting...

Extensor indicis brevis Muscle: an Unusual Muscular Variant International Journal of Morphology
Garbelotti Junior,S; Yukio Fukuda,T; Rodrigues Pereira,V; Garcia Lucareli,P; Olave,E.
Knowledge of anatomical variations of the musculoskeletal system is important for interpreting unusual clinical presentations. We observed the presence of an abnormal extensor indicis muscle in the left hand of an adult male cadaver. In this case, the muscle comes from the ligament and over the scaphoideum and trapezoideum bones and continues after the short muscle belly; it is attached to the dorsal aponeurosis of the indicis. This muscular disposition was described in other studies which demonstrated approximately 1.0% of incidence. Clinically, this anatomical variation may be associated with pain and swelling at the back of the hand. In these cases symptoms tend to increase due to mechanical stress and can be confused with the presence of a dorsal...

Incidence de la salinite sur les equilibres de distribution hydrique et ioniques et sur le metabolisme respiratoire dans le muscle blanc, le muscle rouge et la branchie chez le muge Chelon labrosus ArchiMer
Gallis, J; Piquemal, S; Lambert, J; Sergent, P; Rousseau, V.
Oxygen consumption, water, K super(+) and Na super(+) contents were measured in white muscle, red muscle and gill epithelium in the mullet Chelon labrosus) in relation with the duration of fresh water or sea water (1500mOsm) adaptation. The unit respiratory activities in gill and red muscle where respectively 5 and 3 timesmore elevated than in white muscle. The pericellular K super(+)/Na super(+) ratio of the 3 tissues decreased with the fresh water adaptation duration. In the gill, the intracellular K super(+)/Na super(+) ratio was stable while the parameter decreased strongly in the white muscle. The results are discussed in relation to energetic cost of homocellular regulation and homoepithelial regulation.

Eiras, Jorge Costa; Pereira Júnior, Joaber; Saraiva, Aurélia; Cruz, Cristina Faria.
It is reported the parasitization of Kudoa sp. (Myxozoa, Multivalvulida) within the somatic muscles of the fish Odontesthes bonariensis (Valenciennes, 1835), Micropogonias furnieri (Desmarest, 1823) and Mugil liza Valenciennes, 1836, captured off Rio Grande, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. Other species of fish caught at the same place were not infected. The parasites formed elongated plasmodia inside the muscle fibres. Myoliquefaction or any host tissue reaction were not observed. The morphological and morphometric features of the spores are described, the parasites are compared with other Kudoa species, and the importance of the infection is discussed.

Portable Document Format File Containing the Surface Models to Learn the Stereoscopic Shape of Foot Muscles International Journal of Morphology
Jang,Hae Gwon; Chung,Min Suk; Shin,Dong Sun.
We intended to present a portable document format (PDF) file containing stereoscopic surface models of the foot. While other surface models are subjectively drawn based on anatomical knowledge, our models are reconstructed from high quality sectioned images. Unlike other models, ours in the complimentary PDF file can also be saved on individual user computers to be manipulated off-line. The skin, 27 bones, 24 muscles, and 19 ligaments in the foot were delineated on a male cadaver's sectioned images from the Visible Korean project. After stacking the outlines of the structures, other than those of the ligaments, surface reconstruction was performed. The resultant surface models were placed in a PDF file, in which the models could be superimposed on either...

Variations in lipid classes and fatty acid content in tissues of wild Macrobrachium rosenbergii (de Man) females during maturation OMA
Cavalli, R.O.; Tamtin, M.; Lavens, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
This study describes the variations in total lipid, lipid classes and fatty acids in the midgut gland (MG), ovary, and muscle tissue of wild-caught Macrobrachium rosenbergii to elucidate the importance of these components during sexual maturation. Mature females were captured in the Mae Klong River, Thailand, from July to September 1998, and divided into five groups according to their ovarian development. Total lipid levels in the ovary increased with maturation, but no concomitant decrease in MG lipids was observed. Thus, the lipid requirements of the developing ovary are thought to be more dependent on the immediate ingestion of dietary lipid than on MG reserves. Higher proportions of neutral lipids (NL), mainly triacylglycerols (TG),...
